The Current Reality and GAPSS artifact for standard 5.3 analyzes technology, collaboration, professional learning, and evaluation at Taylor Elementary School. It gives detailed information about what the school currently does in terms of technology as well as recommendations to make the practices better.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 5.3 program evaluation where I designed and implemented program evaluations to determine the effectiveness of professional learning to deepen teacher content knowledge and improve their pedagogical skills to increase student learning. In this artifact I started with information about the school’s vision and the LSPI. To first understand what a school’s needs are you have to look at the vision and goals to see what the school wants to accomplish. If you do not know the vision you will not know how to evaluate its programs effectiveness. After looking at the goals I was able to demonstrate my ability to design and implement a program evaluation through the write up about what is happening at the school as well as ratings and recommendations of professional learning. One section of the artifact determines if the professional learning at the school deepens teacher content knowledge. Teachers do professional development with learning communities that look at students work as well as the content standards. When evaluating I recommended that teachers would learn more about content if they did more observations. Another section determines if professional learning improves teacher pedagogical skills. For this section I discussed the idea that administration does walkthroughs and then they discuss their walkthrough the teacher to improve their pedagogical skills. My evaluation concluded that teachers could use more ability to take charge of their own pedagogical skills. Many times, administration is telling teachers what to do instead of letting them take ownership. Lastly, I evaluated if the professional development increased student learning. In professional development teachers look at data to form groups but as stated in the artifact teachers need more information and tools to help differentiate for diverse groups. Overall, I concluded that the school has very effective professional learning but could use a few changes to enhance the teacher’s knowledge.
This artifact taught me how to evaluate current professional development at my school and decide on what recommendations were the best. One of the biggest jobs of a technology coach is analyzing practices at the school to see if they are accomplishing what is supposed to be accomplished. This skill will help my school decide on what needs to be changed. One thing that I would like to improve about this artifact is adding more information in the diversity section. I think looking to ensure that the school is using diversity to its advantage is important and it is important to know techniques. I would have liked to add more details about how to enhance diversity development at the school.
This artifact impacts school improvement because it analyzes the practices at the school and comes up with the strengths and weaknesses to see what can be improved. The impact can be assessed after recommendations are in place to see if the changes make a difference to teacher learning through data and observations at the school.
