Reflection:
The Coaching Journal artifact for standard 5.2 and is a description and a reflection of a technology coaching that I completed with a teacher at Taylor Elementary School. It describes three of the coaching sessions to tell what we did and how the coaching related to standard coaching guidelines. I also described the skills and effective changes as well as a reflection of the challenges that I experienced.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of Standard 5.2 professional learning where you develop and implement technology based professional learning that aligns with standards and incorporates face to face and online components as well as principal of adult learning and best practices of teaching, learning, and assessment. Before completing this artifact, I completed a needs assessment for the school where teachers were able to describe what technology help, they needed as well as tell how they felt about technology. Based on the results of the needs assessment and my principal’s recommendation I was able to choose one teacher to coach on technology. Also based on the results of the survey I was able to develop and implement technology based professional learning. The survey as well as the interview with the teacher indicated that she needed help with differentiation using technology in her classroom so I developed professional development that showed her how to use technology to differentiate in her special education classroom and then the write up shows how this was implemented with this teacher. When developing the standards, I needed to ensure that I was using the state and national professional learning standards of coaching as well as the principals of adult learning. The standards indicate that I should be using the adult learning strategies to do professional development. One way to use adult learning strategies is to make the person feel comfortable by modeling and observing. By discussing the teachers needs with her she was able to feel better about coaching. First, I had this teacher watch while I modeled a lesson using the technology so that she would feel comfortable enough to also do a lesson in front of me. Because she felt comfortable, I was able to help her more. I was also able to integrate technology to support face-to-face and online components. The artifact describes that I used face-to-face coaching to interview this teacher as well as show her how to use the technology enhanced tools. I also showed her a video I made on how to use the technology so that she would be able to reference it later. This artifact then describes how the professional learning promoted best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment. The artifact demonstrates that when teaching I used a method where I modeled a lesson, we then collaborated on a lesson, and then I observed and discussed the learning with her. This best practice shows that I was able to use coaching techniques to help her through the process and get the most out of the sessions. I then did another survey at the end to see if she understood and could implement the technology on her own.
One major thing that I learned through completing this experience and reflection was how to be a good technology coach. It takes a lot of practice to know how to coach teachers and make them feel at ease when doing coaching. I think this experience helped me have a good start to coaching and made me want to do more so that I could practice my coaching skills. One thing that I could have done differently was to come up with more ways for her to differentiate in her classroom. I used one tool to show her differentiation but I would have liked to give her more options. There are so many ways that technology can help and teachers like to have multiple ways to accomplish a goal so more differentiation forms of technology would have helped this teacher.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted faculty development because I was able to practice coaching skills for future opportunities and I was also able to teach this teacher more about technology for her to use and help others learn. This impact can be assessed through observations as well as a survey at the end of coaching.
