The Engaged Learning Project artifact for standard 2.1 is a unit of study using content standards as well as technology standards to enhance learning for the students. This project uses multiple forms of technology that the students use to get information, communicate, and present information. This creates a more engaged learning environment for the students so that they can better understand the information they are learning.
The Engaged Learning project is a unit where students are writing an informative paper about a career of their choosing. They work with multiple forms of technology to research their career and then present their findings. This project aligns with student content standards for third grade because students are writing an informative paper with an introduction, illustrations, facts and details, linking words, and a conclusion. Students are also using grammar skills and the writing process to complete their assignment. This artifact also aligns with student technology standards because students are constructing knowledge from digital resources when they are researching their career. Students are also communicating globally when they get to interact with someone from their career using digital tools. Lastly, students are using technology to creatively show what they learned about their career. The Engaged Learning Project artifact also demonstrates the ability to model and facilitate the design and implementation of a technology rich learning experience. In this project I was able to design a project that students gained the opportunity to work with multiple forms of technology. As a teacher I integrated technology into teaching by having students view a video to get them interested in the project. Once they were ready to get started, they picked their own career and did research on that career. Students then used Google Docs or Skype to use their online communication skills and reach out to someone in their field they were studying. When implementing this project, I ensured that students had multiple choices of technology to use so that they were comfortable with the tool they were using. One of the major pieces of this project was its technology enhanced factors that included the global communication piece. I had students who were able to talk to zoo workers, dolphin trainers, a Falcon’s cheerleader as well as one of the Steelers football players (plus many more). Students got a real-life view of what it is like in their career of their choosing. This made a huge impact on the students and their learning experience. Due to the technology that was used this project was very impactful for my class.
The Engaged Learning Project taught me how engaging technology can be as a resource. This was one of the first projects that showed me that technology does not have to be used for just videos and research. Students can use technology to create and communicate. The students were much more interested in writing which is usually a struggle for 3rd graders. Normally they dread writing time and while we did this project they were on task, interested, and excited to get started. One thing I would change in this project was the end culminating activity. When we did this the students picked a form of technology to present their findings and post them on a wiki page and also did a wax museum. If I were to do this again, I would do just posting their technology on the wiki page and then do an online gallery walk were students could show their projects to other classes or members of the community/parents. Doing both was too much but the technology presentation went really well. It would be great if students could showcase their technology skills as well as their writing skills in an online format.
This artifact impacted student learning because students used the technology to better their informational writing skills. They learned about writing while using online tools to guide their work which created a more engaging learning experience. This can be assessed from a pre and post test as well as Milestones scores. Students scored significantly better on their pre writing than their post writing after completing this project. Students scores can also be assessed through their score on the writing portion of the Georgia Milestones.
