The Emerging Technology Project artifact for standard 3.6 is an evaluation of one emerging technology called NetTrekker. This is an online search tool for students where all the links are school appropriate as well as picked by teachers. In the project the goal was to create a presentation on a form of technology to use at your school. The presentation includes an in-depth description of the tool as well as how it could be used at the school.
The Emerging Technologies project demonstrates mastery of standard 3.6 about collaborating with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources that go with the school’s technology infrastructure. The first step in completing this project was to collaborate with teachers and administrators as well as look into the county information to select and evaluate a tool that would be best for the school. After talking with school stakeholders one thing that stood out is internet safety which made me consider the use of NetTrekker. This emerging technology is a tool that students can use to research without worrying about clicking something inappropriate. NetTrekker is a great site for ensuring students safety online. One of the main aspects to look at was the vision for the school and for the county and ensure that NetTrekker met the visions goals for technology. This is part of collaboration because if it follows the counties needs in terms of technology, I am able to use it in the classroom. After selecting NetTrekker as the best tool for the school I needed to evaluate it by looking at access, equipment needed, limitations, costs (how to get funding), how we would use it, if it met technology standards, learning goals, how to differentiate, how it ensured communication and collaboration, effectiveness, as well as come up with an implementation plan. Once all of this was evaluated, I was able to decide if this was a good tool for students to use in the classroom. In the end I found that after evaluating this emerging technology it meets the criteria of the school’s infrastructure for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility. Because this resource is a search tool it helps students reach their full potential for excellence. This tool is an accurate representation of the digital learning age that the county is looking for. Students are able to have student led research without the worry of bad content. The teachers are also able to find resources for the students and link the resource to an LMS. NetTrekker is also suitable and compatible because it meets all of the technology standard needs for a tool that engaged students. It helps students learn more able relevant topics as well as includes differentiation features like read aloud, translate, dictionary with visuals as well as many more. This evaluation showed that NetTrekker would be a great tool for the school to invest in.
The emerging technologies project taught me that when selecting a tool for technology use in a school there are a lot of aspects to look at. You need to look at all angles of the resource to ensure it meets the needs to everyone in the school or it is not worth the money. One of the most important parts was getting information from stakeholders. Once you know what types of tools might work for the school and meet the vision you will better be able to find a resource that works. One thing I would change about this project would be that I would actually present it to my school to see if we could get funded. I completed this evaluation and it meets the needs of the school and the county. In the future I plan to present this find to my school to see if there was extra money in the budget for it or if I could get a grant to fund this tool. After seeing its great potential to student learning I would love to actually use it.
This project impacts student learning the most because if we are able to use this tool students will be able to better research topics. Teachers will also be able to provide resources for the students to look at when needed. If students are able to take learning into their own hands, they will be more likely to learn more and understand the content. This self-guided way of learning is a good way to help students achieve their learning goals through authentic learning. One way to assess the impact would be to use test scores to see if students learn what was attended. A pre and a post test on the topic before and after using netTrekker to research would show their learning.
