The Engaged Learning Project artifact for standard 2.3 is a unit of study using content standards as well as technology standards to enhance learning for the students. This project uses multiple forms of technology that the students use to get information, communicate, and present information. This creates a more engaged learning environment for the students so that they can better understand the information they are learning.
The Engaged Learning Project demonstrates mastery of Standard 2.3 Authentic Learning. Authentic learning is when students are using real-world situations to learn a meaningful skill. In this project students’ goal was to learn about a real-life career that they may want to be one day. They used digital schools for an authentic learning experience because they were able to communicate with a person who was actually in the field that they were writing about. This gave students the ability to dig deeper and explore their career in the context of actually being in the career. I was able to model and facilitate the use of video chatting, and Google Docs to help students have the authentic learning experience. Students were very engaged due to the fact they were not using technology just to look up their career but to communicate with people in the community. Due to the fact that this project created an authentic learning environment, students were better able to reach their academic goals of learning to write an informational paper.
After completing the Engaged Learning Project with authentic learning, I learned that the more students get to figure out and do on their own the more they will learn. When students are exploring and discussing something meaningful to them, they are more interested and learn more. The digital tools like Google Docs are a great way to give students this authentic learning experience. Without the online tools we would not have been able to have so many people talk with the students about their career. One thing I would change about this project in the future to make it more authentic is to have the students who are only able to use Google Docs to discuss their information with a community member also create a video. This time students typed their questions and the other person typed back. It would have been nice for students to explore more about their career person by creating and receiving videos as well as pictures to make it more meaningful and visual.
The work that went into creating the artifact went into student learning because due to the fact that students were able to explore their topics and have more authentic learning. They got more information to add into their papers so they were able to learn more about the writing process which was their content standard. Students were so engaged when writing because of the information they explored they scored higher on the Milestones writing portion which is how this learning can be assessed as well as through a pre and post writing sample.
