The Internet Lesson Plan for standard 3.1 is a Lesson plan that integrates technology into classroom standards. This plan ensures that students are using technology in their learning to communicate with others using collaborative learning strategies. Students in this project create a book review and discuss it with their classmates on an online discussion. They then create a final project where they present their book review using iMovie, video note, or PowerPoint to show other students’ what books are good books to read.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 3.1 classroom management and collaborative learning. Reading is a huge focus in our school so this lesson plan is based on getting students to want to read and share their reading with others. When using internet tools one of the most important parts of planning is classroom management. This lesson plan demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate effective classroom management strategies through the description of classroom management tools that is included as well as a list of troubleshooting topics. One of the most important aspects of classroom management when using digital tools is being prepared for what can happen. In this project I describe how to ensure students are using the tools the correct way by doing lessons at the beginning of the year about online safety and netiquette. Students have background knowledge of how to handle and use technology and they will also need a refresher on the rules that pertain to that specific project. Another way that classroom management is described is the use of classroom dojo. There is a set process of how management works in the classroom and the students know how to follow the rules. The biggest thing when ensuring classroom management during student use of digital resources is being prepared and organized for troubleshooting. If you pause to figure out what is wrong you may lose students attention and they will start to misbehave. When writing this plan, I was able to create a list of problems that could arise and already think through how to fix them so that there is minimal down time. This project also demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate effective collaborative learning strategies through the use of discussion boards and video presentations. In this lesson plan students use the LMS discussion tool to first type their rough draft of their book review and then get feedback from their classmates. The class has sentence stems to reply to others to ensure that students are being kind and giving constructive feedback. Once they collaborate on their book review with others and make changes as needed, they use a digital tool to create a book review project that will be added to the schools LMS so that others around the building can look at their presentations and get ideas for what they would like to read next. This type of communication and collaboration creates a sense of accomplishment because students are helping others.
When creating this lesson plan, I learned that being prepared when using technology is the key to success. Students need to know exactly what you expect when using digital tools as well as collaborating with classmates. If students do not know what is expected or have to much down time they start playing around and then the lesson is less successful. To create a successful learning environment preparation is key. One thing that I would change about this project is to add in a global communication component. Students are creating these book reviews for their own class as well as the school to look at but it would be on a higher LoTi level if students were able to communicate with others around the world. I think pairing with a school in another country to discuss books that they like to read would be a fun way to incorporate global communication. This would take more planning but it would be more engaging for the students to find diverse books to read.
This artifact impacted student learning because when doing this project, the students were engaged in learning. They were able to think about their books and learn about others books. They also were able to use skills that we use in class like summarizing and evaluating. Students were excited to create a book review and made them want to read more books that their friends recommended. This learning can be assessed through formative assessment about the content standard or a student survey to see how this project made them feel about reading.
