The classroom blog field experience artifact for standard 3.7 is a description of how I created a classroom blog for my students to use as well as a plan on how to use the blog during class. This blog was created so that students could write and reflect on what we were learning weekly as a way to communicate with the community outside of the school.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 3.7 communication and collaboration because students are using digital communication tools to communicate with people outside of the school locally and globally. They can communicate with other students, parents, peers or anyone in the larger community. This blog showed by ability to utilize a digital communication and collaboration tool. I created the blog for my students to use as well as linked it to the LMS for the students to have easy access. The plan for this blog was to have two students per week write up and take pictures of things we did in class that they liked and add them to the blog page. For one this helps their writing skills and gives them a deeper understanding of how technology works as well as helps them with typing skills that will be a part of the Georgia Milestones test. Students also learned the importance of using this tool to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers and the larger community and how they have a digital footprint that goes along with their communication. They learned how important what they write on the blog was because others would be able to see it. During lessons they learned that whatever they add online will stay there forever and they should be representing the class with their best writing and behavior. By showing them that others around the world could see this blog they were more engaged and careful with what they would add to the blog. Parents and other students were also able to comment on the blog so they would be able to communicate with students in the class. This tool showed my ability to facilitate their learning about online communication skills and to help students get ready for the real world of online communication and collaboration.
This project taught me that communication with people outside of the classroom is helpful for student learning so that they are prepared for the outside world. Students need to use blogs and communication tools so that they can learn from the global communication. This also taught me how to create a blog which I had never done before. It gave me the opportunity to use a tool that students really enjoyed. One thing I would have changed about this project would be to have an opportunity already set up for students to work with other students globally. I would have liked to have found a school in another county that could also write a blog so that they could interact with each other and learn more about other cultures.
This project impacted student learning because students were able to use the tool to practice writing skills, learn about digital citizenship, and communicate with the outside world. This helps students learn more about others and get feedback on their writing. This learning can be assessed through the progression of the blog and how it gets better the more students learn how to use it.
