The Individual Teacher Technology Assessment Narrative artifact for standard 5.1 is information that analyzed a needs assessment that was completed with specifically one teacher as well as other teachers at the school. After completing a LoTi Survey and an adopter survey I analyzed the information and interviewed a teacher to use the results to decide on what she needed coached on so that I could plan the coaching sessions.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the Needs Assessment standard where the goal is to conduct a needs assessment to determine strengths and weaknesses to inform content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. Before writing up an analysis I was able to actually create a needs assessment. The two needs assessments were, one, to show me the levels of technology that are used in classrooms around the school and two an adopter survey to show what hinders teachers from using technology. After actually creating these surveys I was able to conduct the needs assessments to determine not only one teachers’ strengths and weaknesses but school wide strengths and weaknesses in technology. This artifact then goes into details about the results of the survey. I picked one teacher to add more details about and interview who was in need of coaching. I was able to then use the needs assessment to inform me of the content and delivery for my technology based professional learning program for this teacher. This artifact shows that after doing the needs assessment and talking with this teacher I decided that the biggest thing that this teacher struggled with was coming up with ways to use technology in her classroom to dig deeper into learning so this would be the focus when I was coaching this teacher. Using a needs assessment is the best way to make sure not to waste valuable coaching time and ensure that teachers get the most out of the sessions.
This artifact taught me the importance of not just conducting the needs assessment but the importance of using the content that you find to inform you on how to do professional learning programs after the survey is completed. This artifact made me think through the results for the school and this one teacher to help me build the best lessons to fit their needs. One change I would have done to this artifact would be to not only give information about one teacher but about the results of the whole school. The results were used later for other projects but this artifact could have used the survey to compare this teacher to the school’s results.
This artifact impacted faculty development because based on my analysis of the results of the needs assessment I was able to plan professional development that would not waste time of the teachers. This professional development about technology was catered exactly to teachers needs and wants so that they would be more willing to attend and get useful information. This impact can be assessed through conducting another survey after professional development to see if teachers answers change. This would show that teachers learned what they were supposed to learn.
