The Online Unit Syllabus artifact for standard 3.3 is a syllabus that was created for an online learning environment. This syllabus describes the tasks of an online class about heat and rocks and minerals where students will have to do online tasks to complete learning activities. This syllabus describes the technology requirements and goals as well as describes the overall statements about the class and its rules/assignments.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 3.3 online and blended learning. I was able to develop a plan for a blended online unit where students used online content to support and extend student learning as well as be able to tell other teachers how to execute this task. This demonstrates my ability to develop online and blended learning and digital content because the syllabus describes the whole unit. The syllabus was a development of all of the parts that go into an online class. By reading this syllabus students and parents would know what the course is about, how to reach the teacher in an online platform, learning outcomes, the expectations for the learning environment, as well as many online policies. The development of this syllabus created a way for students to learn about everything for an online unit as well as their expanded opportunities that will come about in the class. This artifact also demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate an online and blended learning environment. By creating this syllabus, I modeled a way for teachers to organize their online information that will help students thrive in an online class. This syllabus also shows how to facilitate the online class. Due to all of the details that are included with the syllabus someone coming in from the outside would be able to read the plan and know what was happening in the class as well.
One thing I learned by completing this artifact was when developing and online class with a syllabus you have to add a lot of details. When you are in a classroom with students every day, they are able to ask questions about the assignments easily but in an online class you have to call, text, or email. The syllabus had to be very detailed so that parents would be able to get the information they needed without difficulty. On thing I would have changed about this syllabus was to bold or highlight some of the most important parts of the online class. Due to the fact that I had to add more information about the unit there needed to be a way for information to stand out. The facilitation of key word use would have really helped others and their ability to understand the syllabus.
This artifact impacted faculty development because all classes need a syllabus to describe their policies and assignments. Now that I am able to create a detailed digital tool syllabus as well as help other teachers who may want their own syllabus. I would be able to teach others how to facilitate the use of a syllabus. This impact can be assessed through a student survey where teachers tell how useful a syllabus would be in their class.
